What should an Instagram competitor analysis include?

A useful analysis combines content format, topic, posting date and available engagement. Separate reels, photos and carousels before comparing them: each format gives people a different way to interact. Followers provide account context, but follower counts alone do not tell you which message your audience will care about.

Compare like with like

Start with competitors serving a similar audience and region. Compare posts over the same period and avoid judging a month-old reel against a video published this morning. Use a brand’s typical results as context; a modest account can produce a meaningful outlier without matching the raw views of a much larger brand.

Move from metrics to creative decisions

Use Kaalie to inspect collected posts and reels, read captions and compare the available views, likes and comments. Save examples and annotate the hook, product promise, proof and call to action. Kaalie analysis can help connect those observations to a question you can test with your own content.

Keep missing data separate from zero

A missing view count does not mean nobody watched the video. Public metrics and media availability vary, and views are not unique viewers. Do not infer sales or paid promotion from engagement alone. Compare only records with the fields needed for the calculation.

PUT IT INTO PRACTICE

A worked example

A skincare team finds that product demonstrations outperform its competitors’ static announcements within the same recent period. The next test could demonstrate one common customer problem, with a clear before-and-after process rather than an unsupported results claim.

Example for explanation; not a measured customer result.

Common questions

Can I analyse an account I do not own?

Kaalie researches accessible public content. It does not provide private Instagram Insights for competitor accounts.

Should I compare reels with photos?

Review formats separately first. View counts and likes measure different behaviours and are not interchangeable.
